The Boston University men’s hockey team has added yet another piece to its already impressive recruiting class for the upcoming 2014-15 campaign, as a source confirmed to the Boston Hockey Blog that NTDP U18 defenseman Brandon Fortunato has committed to Boston University.
Fortunato took to Twitter to confirm the news of his upcoming arrival to Commonwealth Avenue.

Proud to announce my commitment to play college hockey at Boston University #Terriers #

  1. Why go to Harvard when you can get a great education and be with normal people at the same time. Welcome.

  2. At 144 lbs, how is this kid going to compete against older and much bigger players? skill is one thing, but you need some size, especially on D

This is a big get for BU. This will further upgrade next year’s defensive corps and takes some pressure off Grzelcyk. Fortunato should be capable of assuming the #1 d-man role once Grzelcyk moves on. By then he’ll be complemented by 2 other very skilled, mobile defensemen arriving in Fall 2015 (Vas Kolias, Charlie McAvoy).

The 2013-14 BU team struggled mightily at times to get the puck out of their own end. The skating abilities of the incoming defensemen this and next Fall should certainly improve this aspect of BU’s play.

  4. Looks like Coach O’Connell is pulling his weight already. Yet another recruit with what appears to be plenty of potential. Can’t wait for the first week in October to get here. It certainly is going to be a much different lineup than this past year and at least on paper it looks to be a much better one. Who does he kick loose with this one?

  5. 144 lbs? is that correct?

  6. Maybe – but that’s probably twice what Gaudreau weighed.

  7. check the article. it says “During his tenure with the NTDP squad, the 5-foot-9, 144-pound defenseman”
in the long run, he might turn out great so i am glad we got him, but i think at first he will get pushed around. i am not questioning his toughness and skill, just his size

how come olson and coughlin have not been announced?

  8. Welcome to BU Brandon.

For those of you who question Brandon’s size, just give him a chance. You’ll love his skill, and his heart. My guess is he will come in at about 150 + and he will benefit from more than one year at BU. There is a reason Harvard, BC and others wanted this kid. This is a skilled player we may get to keep for 3 or 4 years.

    Can’t wait for October.

  9. yes but D is a different position

  10. Gaudreau, Gionta, sometimes these little guys are great college hockey players.

  11. This kid has a ton of talent,BC wanted him among many other elite programs,But he chose BU,Hockey at Boston University is definitely on the upswing,by the way, where have the negative Trolls been?DQ is definitely putting his stamp on the program,I see him coaching here a long time.I’m starting to see why the team won the triple crown in 09′!!

  12. I agree and the cuts he made, although not easy, are part of that upswing.
