After two impressive seasons at Brown University, goaltender Mathieu Caron is headed to Boston University.
Caron’s arrival will fill the void left by star netminder Drew Commesso, who signed an entry-level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks on April 11.
Caron, a 6’0”, 195-pound sophomore, posted a 2.49 goals against average and a .921 save percentage in 24 games for the Bears this year. Those numbers showed a significant improvement from the netminder’s freshman season, when the goalie posted a 2.74 goals against average and .911 save percentage.
Statistically, Caron was the second-best goalie in the ECAC this season, behind Quinnipiac’s Yaniv Perets, who led the Bobcats to a national title and was a finalist for the Mike Richter Award. Caron was Brown’s Hobey Baker Award nominee and named to the All-ECAC third team and second team All-Ivy. He also boasts the best stats of any goalie to enter the transfer portal so far this offseason.
BU’s need for quality goaltending became even more apparent Monday, after backup goaltender Vinny Duplessis entered the transfer portal.
Caron, originally from Abbotsford, British Columbia, spent five seasons with the Chilliwack Chiefs of the British Columbia Hockey League before joining Brown.
Commesso started for BU the past three seasons, but the second round pick of the Blackhawks opted to make the jump to the NHL after the Terriers were eliminated from the Frozen Four last Thursday.
