Weekend Roundup: Providence and Northeastern

The No. 15 Boston University men’s hockey team went into the weekend looking for four Hockey East conference points and emerged with two.

On Friday night, the Terriers looked to bounce back from their 3-0 loss to No. 8 Providence College. After a scoreless two periods, sophomore defenseman Chad Krys broke through the Friars’ defense and scored his first two goals of the season within 1:37 of the other. Sophomore goaltender Jake Oettinger’s 31-save night also contributed to the 2-0 win and marked his fifth collegiate shutout.

However, BU was unable to carry this momentum into the following night as it hosted No. 13 Northeastern University. Forwards Bobby Hampton and Nolan Stevens got the Huskies on the board twice during the opening frame in what appeared to mimic last season’s Hockey East quarterfinals to a tee.

Unlike like the quarterfinals, the Terriers were unable to come back despite junior forward Jordan Greenway’s second goal of the season. Stevens went on to score twice more in the second period to bring Northeastern home a 4-1 win while BU accumulated two game misconducts in the final period.

While the Terriers were unable to match the Huskies’ offense, they will have another chance next Friday night at Matthews arena. Then the following night BU will host the University of No. 9 New Hampshire at Agganis Arena.

  1. Disappointed to see Olson suspended. Never saw the replay but I was surprised to see it called as a penalty, then benadetto got involved so that did not surprise me. Rember last year against Merrimack nick was hit with a cheap shot and was done for the season. No penalty and no suspension. Hockey east needs consistency with it’s officials. I would love to see that replay .

  2. When is Quinn going to use Switzer this season.

  3. I think it is time for Quinn to go. Clearly, his method isn’t working. This season is over. Hopefully, Greenway signs over the break and we don’t have to see him again!!

    • I wouldn’t go that far but something definitely needs to change. We need older guys, at least 2 or three who can show these kids how to bounce back after a disappointing loss (Denver). They deserved that game but Jake was just bad. Now ever game since seems the same…no D, too many fancy passes and Jake sliding around on his knees.
Still early, hopefully they can turn it around.

  4. This team will be fine. Not only is coach the best but his assistants are great too. I believe this team will improve as the season goes on. Jordan is a beast he is playing well. I think he’s leaving but it’s not to the NHL but rather the Olympics. He’s a great kid who means so much to this team. jake is so fundamentally sound hard saves look easy. Because of this teams youth and indecisive defense he has been hung out to dry. Jake will be fine as well. Go terriers ?

  5. I was just waiting to see who would call for the coach to get fired. That is the most ludicrous post ever…all you have to do is look at the time he has been at BU.1 National title game, 1 goal away from the frozen FOUR, and another trip to the NCAA tournament, 3 straight year’s. And I believe that the season can get turned around. This is BU HOCKEY, not your average program. And the Coach has said on multiple occasions that if you don’t win a National championship, it’s not a successful season at BU…..
