The Boston University men’s hockey team has officially announced its freshman class for the 2010-11 season, and believe it or not, there was at least one surprise.
As expected, forward and first-round NHL draft pick Charlie Coyle headlines the eight-man group. US National Under-18 team members Adam Clandening and Matt Nieto also come as no surprise along with forward Sahir Gill and defensemen Patrick MacGregor and Garrett Noonan.
The class also includes forward Yassin Cisse, whose arrival on Commonwealth Ave. was up in the air following a season in which he played just 18 games due to a torn ankle tendon. But The Daily Free Press reported on June 16 that BU coach Jack Parker expected Cisse to come this season, and the official announcement by the BU Athletic Department solidifies his spot on the roster for the upcoming season.
The biggest surprise came from unheard-of recruit Matt Ronan, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound forward out of Woburn, Mass. The local kid’s name had seemingly never been mentioned as a possibility for the Terriers’ 2010-11 roster but yet here he is. Ronan recorded 12 points for the Valley Jr. Warriors of the EJHL last year. He actually comes from a line of past Terriers; his older brother, Dan, played for the 1996 and 1997 Frozen Four teams, and his cousin, Ed, also played for two Frozen Four teams in 1990 and 1991 before winning a Stanley Cup for Montreal in 1993.
