Junior defenseman Gavin McCarthy will captain the 2025-26 Boston University men’s hockey team, the team announced on Monday.
Junior Jack Harvey and sophomores Cole Eiserman and Cole Hutson were named assistant captains.
This is the second time that a McCarthy will wear the ‘C’ for the Terriers. Gavin’s brother, Case, captained the 2023-24 team, which advanced to the Frozen Four. The McCarthy brothers are the fourth siblings to serve as captains for BU and first since Mike (2001–02) and Jay (1995–96) Pandolfo.
This marks the second straight season that BU has named a junior as captain and the third consecutive year that a sophomore has held a role within the leadership group.
McCarthy, a Clarence Center, N.Y., native, has missed only one game across his first two seasons with the Terriers. Last season, he posted a 3–13–16 stat line and recorded 77 blocked shots over 39 games. He was named to the NCAA Toledo All-Regional Team for his postseason performance as a sophomore. Two of McCarthy’s goals came in championship games, one against Notre Dame in the Friendship Four and another against Boston College to help BU secure its 32nd Beanpot title.
Harvey broke out in the second semester of his freshman season and carried a similar sentiment through his sophomore season. Harvey appeared in all 40 games last year, finishing with an 11–16–27 line. He recorded nine multi-point games in the 2024-25 season, one of which helped propel BU to the NCAA regional finals after an 8-3 win over Ohio State. He was also named to the NCAA Sioux Falls All-Regional Team in 2024.

Eiserman led all NCAA freshmen with 25 goals, including four during the national tournament, leading the Terriers to the national title game. Eiserman scored a crucial goal in the third period of the Terriers’ win over BC in the Beanpot championship. He earned a spot on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team alongside fellow assistant captain, Hutson. He ended his first season at BU with a 25-11-36 line.

Hutson was the National Rookie of the Year and a First Team All-American. He finished his freshman campaign leading among all NCAA defensemen in points (48) and assists (34). Cole is the third Hutson brother to be part of BU’s leadership group, following his older brothers Lane, who wore an ‘A’ in the 2023-24 season, and Quinn, who wore it last year.
“I’m excited that Gavin, Jack and the Coles were voted to lead our team this season,” head coach Jay Pandolfo said in a press release. “They have all certainly made an impact for us on the ice during their time here, but they’ve also set a great example of what it takes to succeed in the weight room and in the classroom. It’s clear when being around them that they’re all proud to be Terriers and all four of them will continue to be great representatives of the University as we once again compete for a national title.”
