For the first time since 2018, the Boston University men’s hockey team will be hopping across the pond.

The Terriers will join Harvard, Merrimack and Notre Dame in the 2024-25 Friendship Four midseason tournament, which will take place in Belfast, Northern Ireland next November, it was announced Thursday.

BU lost to Union College in the tournament’s title game in 2018, the Terriers’ only other appearance in Belfast. UConn and Yale were the other participating teams that year.

The tournament has been held five times, starting in 2015. To this point, the event has included two Hockey East teams and two ECAC teams. Notre Dame’s appearance will mark the first time a Big 10 program has been involved. It also creates the potential for BU to face the Fighting Irish for a third consecutive season.

  1. Any information on first round match ups?

    • Nothing official yet. But in the previous tournaments, the two Hockey East teams have played each other in one semifinal and the two ECAC teams have played in the other semifinal. So fair to expect BU would play Merrimack in the first round, unless the format gets switched around.
