Junior forward Andrew Glass has been dismissed from the Boston University men’s hockey team, according to coach Jack Parker. Parker suspended Glass indefinitely prior to last weekend’s Shillelagh Tournament for “missing meetings and being late.”
After today’s practice, Parker added that “it’s a whole bunch of things” when asked if this is a similar situation to the one that caused him to bench Glass for last year’s season opener. At the time, Parker said Glass “broke team rules.”
At the end of today’s practice, Parker said the suspension was still indefinite. In the hours since then, he has decided to make the suspension permanent.
Glass came to BU as a seventh-round draft pick of the Washington Capitals. The Wrentham native contributed two goals and an assist in 15 games as a freshman on the 2008-09 national championship squad, but followed that up with just two points as a sophomore. Glass was off to a better start this season, registering two goals and three assists in 15 games to tie him for 10th on the team in scoring.
BU will be ok this season. Think they will still beat Vermont Sunday. Game on CBS College Sports Network for those who cant be there. They actually carry lots of College Hockey on the weekends which I was not aware of.

He must have really messed up if Parker dismissed him now when we are pretty thin coming off the bench at the moment. We already lost Cisse and he has not shown much faith to play MacGregor or Ronan for any serious ice time.
I wonder who will get the free ride that booting Glass opened up.
Parker has lost all control of this team.
Any idea if the captains agreed with this move?
Not THAT surprised by this. Commitment, work ethic and questionable attitude have been a persistent issue w/ Glass. When a coach (or manager in the business world) has someone who is high-maintenance and doesn’t add value to the organization, decisions like this have to be made.
“Parker has lost all control of this team.”
Absolutely incorrect. Had he lost control, situations like this and with the Saponari brothers would be allowed to continue without punishment.

Booted for missing a few meetings? THis is the lamest excuse ever.
Saporani last year now Glass?
Parker needs to retire.
If they win tomorrow night the same people saying he lost control will be saying it was a great move that sparked a victory
First, getting kicked off the team doesn’t free up a scholarship. Once you’re offered an athletic scholarship, the team doesn’t get it back unless the player voluntarily leaves school.
Second, how quickly we forget that Parker just won a national championship less than two years ago. Prior to that there was a lot of talk about him needing to retire. It’s cyclical.
People need to keep in mind how young this team is. Clearly they played a bit over their heads the first few weeks of the season and that may have set some unrealistic expectations. I imagine they will be fighting for home ice by the end of the season and will probably be either one of the last teams in or first teams out of the NCAAs, which I think is a good accomplishment for a team with what, 15 or 16 first or second year players?
There have been issues with Glass dating back to his freshman years, when he seemed to ‘disappear’ in the later part of the NCAA championship season run. Glass had issues with participation, and what thought were ‘phantom’ injuries and lame excuses. He didn’t always show up ready, or to play.
No it appears that some of those issues resurfaced this year. I doubt that the BU coaches or players felt that he was a brother that could be counted upon.
Glass has some talent. He can skate like the wind. But his constition appears better suited for the Ice Capades than for D1 college hockey.
Anyone think the NHL is still interested after seeing him, or not seeing him, over the past two and half seasons?
Anyone that thinks that Parker/Bavis/Powers/Geregoshian have lost control needs to think again. This shows they ARE in control.
They could have brought back Glass, used him for the rest of the season since they are thin at forward, and then cut him loose.
Instead, they cut him loose when he still had some value. But how many chances do you need to get to show commitment?
Glass wasn’t the internal cancer that Saponari was, but he didn’t himself and favors or credit, either.
This move makes BU even thinner at forward, even less experienced, and could hurt short term. But long term it was the right thing to do to cut your losses with a player who never came close to his own potential because of his own lack of disciple and desire.
There is obviously more to this than missing a few meetings. Parker said it was a whole bunch of things not just one or two
It’s less about how many meetings you miss than why you miss them. There are legitimate reasons and then excuses. My guess is Glass had excuses.
Yes this is a young team. However, I don’t believe the 2009 season eliminates all questions about Parker’s coaching. That team was loaded with NHL talent as we can now see, and one great year does not erase 12+ other seasons of relative disappointment. I’m glad to see Parker is doing what he feels is needed to make this years team successful. However, if it were up to me, I would like to see a change at the top.
We’re not in the locker room so it is hard to know precisely what caused this action. However, I think when you have three players kicked off the team in two years as well as several others suspended it does raise questions: Is the coaching staff recruiting with an eye toward character and drive? Is it intervening early enough and effectively enough if a player appears to be a problem? Further, is their sufficent leadership from the captains? Clearly, this is a young team and needs a lot more guidance than the senior-dominated 09 team. Still, this is not a good trend and I hope the staff will look at all these issues so these kind of inciedents can be avoided in the future.
This doesn’t just happen at BU. If I recall, BC has also dismissed a few players the last two or three seasons, and nobody is saying Jerry York is losing control or needs to retire. They’ll be fine. They lost so much after the championship that they need a year or two to restock talent. If they were winning nobody would be complaining. Because they’re struggling everyone is looking to find excuses. It’s youth and inexperience, not a lack of control on the part of the coaches.
Twelve years of relative disappointment? Really? Do you realize how hard it is to win a national championship? These do not come easy and often. The fact that BU (or any other good team) was in the hunt that often during the last 35 years is a sign of a good and well managed program. Dick Umile at UNH is a great coach with a great program – and there are many others – but where is all their hardware compared to Parker? MONDAY MORNING GOALIES get real.
who said being suspended does not suspend the scholarship.Lets face it college sports are big business and anything goes
I am an insider and I know that Andrew was suspended for missing an optional practice during exam week and being a few minutes late to 2 team meetings. He is fine young man and his suspension was just a way to free up scholarship money.
If the insider is correct with his information than the punishment does not fit the crime. The team’s performance since they came off the winter break has been awful. They are very fortunate to not have lost all three games. To make Andrew a scapegoat for the team’s shortcomings is ridiculous. Furthermore, I know for a fact that Andrew suffered a concussion his freshman year and was unable to participate for the second half of the year. He deserved better treatment.
The insider is not correct.
All set with parker’s decision, he’s got his favorites and needs to go. Parker’s done this to players in the past so he can get them to leave so someone can grab their scholarship. Glass is a good kid who works hard on and off the ice. Glass has got great talent and deserved a better a college hockey experience. This is a very unfair and poor decision. Where was the support from the team to keep glass? Everyone knows he’s a hard worker and brings it every game when he gets a chance to play. I wish the best for Glass.
Agree that this is heartless move that makes no sense. Missing an optional meeting and some vague other issues? This is vintage Parker. Look how the team has responded since his suspension… their worst effrst to date. Parker’s idea of motivation including using a player as a scapegoat and publicly ridiculing his players is an antiquated method that typically has the opposite effect. He is a great recruiter, but a lousy coach.
Scott, if the insider is not correct, than please tell us what happened. Stop being a Parker apologist. Your job is to report facts. Your latest interview with him regarding Andrew revealed nothing. The team has not played well in a long time perhaps they should concentrate their efforts on a better powerplay and penalty killing.
No one associated with the team is going to say exactly what happened publicly, but Parker said he missed “meetings”- plural. We got all these same comments last year with the Saponari thing- the punishment doesn’t fit the crime, Parker’s making them a scapegoat, Parker’s playing favorites, etc. I’m not saying there isn’t more to the Glass thing, and I’m not saying I’m done reporting on it, but this is what I have for now. And at least I put my name on what I report. Until I hear otherwise, I’m putting zero stock in something an anonymous commenter who claims to be an insider says.
The scholarship is not at risk as I understand it, particularly given the offense(s). Missing a practice and being late for a couple of meetings is not sufficient grounds to take away a scholarship. The issue is more to do with Parker”s personality clash with Andrew. Andrew is a great kid and a PHENOMENAL student. He’s got a lot going for him but Parker didn’t like him from the get go and never truly gave him a chance. Parker will tell you other wise but that’s BS. Andrew, along the way, probably could’ve handled certain situations better. It wasn’t a good match, he should have never gone to BU. Its a decision he will regret the rest of his life. Anonymous 2 (another insider).
Scott, you’re missing the point. Jack stated to you that the Glass and Saponari situations were totally different. He even said Glass was a good student. You’re supposed to go to college to get an education, not become an NHL player. Being tardy for practice or missing meetings is not as bad as missing class.
No one said anything about missing class. I totally agree that school is more important than hockey. But if Glass missed multiple meetings and was given plenty of time to fix that like Parker said, I think dismissal from the team is a justifiable punishment. I’m not saying Parker’s always right or that I always take him at his word, but that’s what he said, so that’s what I reported. Parker didn’t take away his scholarship, so I’m not sure why anyone’s even bringing that up.
If Parker didn’t like Glass, why did he recruit him? Parker didn’t get a good read on Glass during the recruiting process?
That doesn’t seem to bode well for future recruits if Parker isn’t able to develop a relationship with recruits before they get to BU.
Chris Bourque rarely made it to class yet Parker seemed to have an issue with him just as long as he showed during games.
Scott, have you tried to contact Andrew yet? Parker claims he missed multiple meetings. How many times and what were the circumstances? I can’t believe that Andrew purposely missed them. It doesn’t make sense for someone trying to stay in the lineup to aggravate the coaching staff.
I have tried to get a hold of him, but he has not yet gotten back to me. If he wants to tell his side of the story, I will gladly report it.
