Mark Dennehy and Stephane Da Costa Postgame Transcripts

Mark Dennehy

Opening statement

This is a good league, probably the best in the country. You can’t spot any team in this league four goals.

On whether or not he had any regrets starting Braithewaite over Cannata

No, and I told Braithe, I’m not Mike Keenan. I very rarely take a goalie out. Usually, it’s for his own good in the sense that I don’t think we played very well in front of him. Sometimes your team needs a shake. Andrew Braithewaite’s a good goalie. He’s been a good goalie since he came to Merrimack, and I believe we have the best two goalies in the league.

On what happened in the first period

I didn’t think that we were ready to play, but you don’t know that until the puck drops.

On how his team rebounded in the second

This is as resilient a team as I’ve ever been around, including Hockey East championship teams, ECAC championship teams, Frozen Four teams. This is a resilient group. I think they challenged themselves a little bit too much tonight by giving up four goals before we showed up. And when I say that, a lot of it is what BU does to you. They’re very good in this building. They were on us. Their coaches made some adjustments that I think gave us trouble, by stretching the guy. We didn’t react to it that well, but I also don’t think that was our best effort.

On what BU changed from Friday night to Saturday night

I wouldn’t hazard a guess. If Jack knows, I’m sure he’ll bring it to every game.

On if he noticed anything BU changed on the ice

No, they just stretched a guy a couple times. Beyond that, they just played harder.

On his team’s power-play success

Phil Roy works on the power play, and I give him a lot of credit. He’s worked really hard to move some guys around, especially since I’m always in there dabbling and messing things around. It helps to have good players.

On the play of Stephane Da Costa

He’s really good. I’m not being facetious. I mean, he’s ridiculous. He touches the puck and it’s his game. That’s what I saw.

On his team’s penalty kill

I think we can kill penalties. I think that’s pretty safe to say. In light of last night’s 3-for-12, we’re pretty good on special teams. I don’t like to see that many 5-on-5 goals. That’s something we’ve talked about all year long. I think we need to do a better job of that.

On his team’s persistence after the first

Like I said, this is a very resilient group. There’s a lot of belief in that locker room. And I thought they did a good job, once the first period was over, on trying to win the second. And then, let’s try to make this a game. That was our goal –– let’s try to make this a game.

Stephane Da Costa

On what happened in the first

We didn’t come out strong. We didn’t play our game. We didn’t bring the intensity we should have.

On what’s made him so successful as a freshman in Hockey East

Just trying to help the team and the organization and everything like that. That’s it.

On what was said in the locker room after the first

That’s locker room stuff. Can’t really tell you.

On his goal

I saw that Jesse Todd, number 27, was in front of the net screening the goalie. So, the goalie can’t see anything, so I just shot it, and, a goal.
