With tournaments canceled, 2019-20 season ends abruptly

The 2019-2020 Boston University men’s hockey team’s season appears to have come to an end, cut short by a global virus that has brought nearly every American sport to a halt at every level.

On Thursday afternoon, Hockey East followed the lead of four of the five other division one college hockey conferences, announcing that its postseason tournament would be canceled due to concerns regarding Coronavirus. The NCAA followed suit, canceling all national tournaments,

The Terriers concluded the regular season with a record of 13-13-8, going 10-9-5 in conference play to finish sixth in Hockey East, and were scheduled to face third-seeded UMass Lowell this weekend at Tsongas Center in a best-of-three quarterfinal series.

Within a matter of days, the weekend went from an exciting win-or-go-home playoff series, to one that would be played without fans in attendance, to one that would not occur at all.

The decision to cancel marks an abrupt finish to the 2019-20 season. For BU, this means a sudden goodbye to seniors Patrick Curry, Patrick Harper, Gabe Chabot, and Nico Lynch, as well as grad students Sam Tucker and Alex Brink.

Curry, the team’s captain, led BU in goals this season with 19. Junior David Farrance had a record-breaking year for a BU defenseman, setting the pace with 43 points and 29 assists. He and Harper both put up 14 goals, while Harper finished with 37 points.

Trevor Zegras drew attention all season long as the headliner of a 13-man freshman class, responding to the reputation of being selected ninth overall in the 2019 NHL Draft to end up second on the team in assists (25) and third in points (36).

Barring any final end-of-season festivities, hockey on Comm. Ave. is done until next October. In the coming days and weeks, the Boston Hockey Blog will continue its coverage, including updates regarding these very unique season-ending circumstances.

As always, we thank our readers for their dedication to the Boston Hockey Blog and BU Hockey all throughout the season. Its finish may be unremarkable in a hockey sense, but the last five months have been anything but.
