Shane Bowers has agreed to an entry-level deal with the Colorado Avalanche, where he was traded after being selected by the Ottawa Senators with the 28th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.
Formerly a sophomore forward with Boston University, the Halifax, Nova Scotia native was named to the 2017-18 Hockey East All-Rookie Team, and received an All-Star Honorable Mention and Rookie of the Week title during that same season.
Bowers appeared in all 40 games during his first year with BU, collecting a team-best plus/minus of +16 while also tying for the team lead in game-winning goals (4). The eight-time Hockey East Top Performer also posted career-highs in goals (17) and assists (15).
Returning for the 2018-19 season, Bowers was a mainstay on the Terrier top line, missing just one game in his sophomore campaign. The second-year skater was one of just three Terriers to reach a double-digit total in both goals (11) and assists (10).
Having joined BU from the USA National Under-18 team where he captained the squad to a silver medal in 2018 and won gold in 2017, Farabee finishes his brief career on Commonwealth Avenue with nine multi-point games and three three-point games.
After coming to Commonwealth Avenue from the Waterloo Black Hawks of the United States Hockey League, Bowers now concludes his collegiate career with 28 goals and 25 assists in 77 games.
Entering the NHL at 19 years old, Bowers will likely get an opportunity to show he is ready for the professional game with the Colorado Eagles of the American Hockey League.
During Bowers’ time at BU, the Terriers won a Hockey East championship en route an appearance in the national tournament. In that postseason run, the then-freshman tallied one goal and four assists.
If Bowers thinks he is ready for the NHL he is crazy. Weak shot and not strong on his skates he has no chance. What did he have, eleven goals with tons of ice time last year ? What is wrong with some of the players we recruit ? Maybe this is good for the program to get the losers away from Commonwealth Avenue and get some guys who WANT to play for BU.
Strong words SoCC, but I can’t deny that he would have benefitted from another year with BU. It’s always possible that he was swayed by seeing so many other Terriers leave, or maybe his fellow Canadian and Avalanche prospect Cale Makar was in his hear at some point this season…
