Terriers add goaltender LaCouvee, ’98-born Bellows

By Andrew Battifarano/DFP Staff

This summer continues to be a productive one on the recruiting front for the Boston University men’s hockey team.

Forward Kieffer Bellows made his commitment with the Terriers official on Twitter Wednesday night, making him the third ’98 player to agree to attend BU.

I am very excited and proud to announce my commitment to Boston University! Thank you to everybody who has helped me! #GoTerriers

At Edina High School this season, Bellows notched 27 points in 25 games played. He also scored three times in five games during his team’s state title run.

Bellow’s 5-foot-11 stature has allowed him to develop into one of the top power forwards in the amateur ranks. In May, he was selected 14th overall by the Sioux Stampede in the USHL Phase I Futures Draft. The Minnesota native is the son of former NHL winger and Stanley Cup champion Brian Bellows.

It has not been confirmed what season Bellows will be joining the Terriers, but fellow ’98-born players — forwards Clayton Keller and Hank Crone — are set to be on Commonwealth Avenue for the 2016-17 campaign.

BU also added goaltender Connor LaCouvee to the mix. He joins junior netminders Matt O’Connor and Sean Maguire and graduate student Anthony Moccia.

LaCouvee played in 38 games for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (Port Alberni, British Columbia) in 2013-14, posting a 2.82 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage. According to a report, LaCouvee will join the Terriers for the 2014-15 season.

  1. And the beat goes on,recruiting players like this should definitely get BU back to the Frozen Four, sooner rather than later!!Maguire will come back to school, but for some unknown non medical reason, will not play hockey this upcoming season.I think it’s a big blow, enjoyed watching him play, solid goaltender.

    • I think both goalies were very average and had some very poor games at times although playing with a very poor defense. A big blow, I think not. However that you for the information on Maguire.( I would assume it was his academic standing- a guess)

  2. Where did you hear about Maguire’s situation? As for our recruitment operations, BU is well on its way to being a D-1 all-star team!

  3. Trust me Mr.Staub, and it is not his grades!

  4. on terms of mcguire,i heard it was injury related (back) and that makes sense because, if it is, he can’t leave school and play somewhere else. also if it was academic, he would leave and not lose a year of development

we just better hope o’connor does not jump ship or we are cooked

  5. A lot of speculation going on, but I guess that’s good. It shows interest which is always a plus.

I am trying to figure out how we are bringing in so many recruits this year with so few players leaving by graduation and only two being cut — so far. I’ll trust DQ and his assistants have it figured out and that they are not putting BU in the position BC was in years ago, pre Millbury and York.

Good luck DQ and all involved in BU Hockey.

    • The recruit class will top out at 10–the six already announced and four more. If Maguire is sitting out the season, the roster should have 3G, 8D and 16 F–total 27, three more than last season.

    • Exactly…..

    • 6/23 @ 8:30 AM and “Exactly”, You sound convincing in your numbers, but who of the 12 recruits listed as coming in in 2014 in this blog is not coming? Eichel, LaCouvee, Fortunato, Phelps, Piccinich are givens for this year as far as I can see. So, whoi doesn’t come if only 10 are coming?

  6. Maguire is not injured, academics are fine, for a personal reason,he will not play this upcoming season. And for the person who wrote both goalies were average,if that were true,Last years team would have lost every games!!!!

  7. I made that comment and have been watching BU goalies from the 1965 season on. They were very average.

    • Well Mr. 1965,I wouldn’t be proud to announce that, obviously you haven’t learned a thing about Hockey in all these years. They aren’t the best BU has had in net,but kept us from getting blown out on many occasions last year!!Mr.1977

    • My point is that our overall recruiting which includes goalies has been poor to average. Proof is NHL Rosters. For over ten years we have not put a regular goalie in the NHL while our HE foes have put in a few . Case closed.

    • John Curry dressed for the Wild during the playoffs.

How many goalies have Northeastern, UNH, Vermont (in Hockey East), Lowell, and Merrimack sent to the NHL, even as a backup, since Rick DiPietro (my guess at your date) was drafted #1 by the Islanders? Oh. and Providence. For some reason I thought Goepfert made it to the NHL. So, besides Maine, BC, and UMass goalies, which goalies have I missed?

    • I couldn’t agree with you more about recent recruiting,oh,wait a minute, didn’t DQ recruit for 4 years prior to the 09’National title,And how many of those players made it to the NHL?I know the answer,do you???& a HB winner.@Mr.1965

  8. Maguire and O’Connor aren’t the problem. They aren’t the best two goalies we have ever had but they are far from the worst. With a much better team in front of them they will be fine. If Maguire doesn’t play they’ll be fine with O’Connor and the new guy.

  9. My understanding is that 10 recruits showed up for stregnth and conditioning. Twelve recruits are listed. Who did not show? Who are we not getting this year?
